Fibus: Minibuses to Finland

April 20, 2015 · Services: Data · Legacy Perl

Fibus was an aggregator idea for trips between Saint Petersburg and Finland. Many private carriers worked on this route independently, each with their own routes, schedules, phone numbers, and booking rules.

For passengers, this was also a practical problem. A regular bus was not always the most convenient option: a minibus could pick someone up closer to home, bring them closer to the final destination, and provide a more flexible trip scenario.

The service idea was to bring fragmented carriers and passenger demand into one place. A passenger could search for a suitable trip, while carriers received an additional channel for requests.

For the bureau, this remains a useful early example of applied automation: fragmented information about routes, carriers, and trips was turned into a working web interface, while finding a suitable trip became simpler and faster.
